Support Worker – Part-time, Coastal Area / New Plymouth

We are seeking a part-time Support Worker for the coastal area of New Plymouth. The position is from 10 to 15 hours a week, based initially at the family home in Opunake and later in the community, most likely New Plymouth. These hours could increase over time.

About the role

The successful candidate will primarily be working with a male in his late 20s returning to live away from his family home. He would benefit from having a support worker who can take a supportive, but confident approach. They will need to be comfortable problem solving and it would be beneficial if they have experience in life or professionally helping people get ready for flatting.

The current support consists of finding a flat, accessing the community, helping build structure into his days and managing daily tasks and household responsibilities. Being prepared to be active and being flexible with travel, including using public transport, is essential.

A patient, but persistent approach is ideal, as this person often requires repeated prompting for the same tasks. This person has autism and lives with significant anxiety.

The successful candidate would ideally be a Level 3 or 4 Health & Wellbeing or equivalent. However, this isn't essential as life and work experiences are also very valuable.

Duties of the role

Support the individual to achieve their personal plans
Maintain the quality of the support we provide
Support the individual with personal hygiene and wellbeing
Promote an environment that encourages the individual to feel safe and comfortable
Encourage the individual to grow and increase their independence by supporting them to learn skills for daily living and to make decisions and choices
Collaborate with other support staff by attending staff meetings, coaching, keeping each other informed about the individual being supported and sharing ideas with your team members
Engage in discussions with your team on the team plan, projects to be completed, administration tasks, rostering and training and development
Skills and experience

Experience working with people who are autistic and/or non-verbal
Qualification in Level 3 or 4 Health & Wellbeing is desirable.
Computer literacy
Hold a current first aid certificate
Valid driver's license essential
Must be fully vaccinated
Someone with good communication skills
Great time management skills
